Annapurna Circuit

Annapurna Circuit

16 days

TOUGH

I walked the Annapurna Circuit in 1990 while serving in the army and was able to visit the sanctuary as well, up to the base camp from where most attempts at the peak of Annapurna 1 start. The highest part of the trek is the Thorung La Pass at around 5,500m so altitude will be an issue if you go too quickly with insufficient acclimatisation. Depending on the time you have available you can just do the circuit, which can be done in as little as 10 days, or include the sanctuary with its incredible 360-degree panorama of the Annapurnas and the unclimbed (allegedly) and holy Machhapuchhare (7,000m). The trek includes a bath in the natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda. It's another challenging trek, particularly as you get above 5,000m. Lower down you are walking through lush, almost tropical vegetation, where you will likely see the grey langur monkey.
