Walking The Trollheimen Triangle, Norway
8 - 14 September 2024
CHALLENGING
This is a 5-day trip to Norway to walk the stunning Trollheimen Triangle in one of Norway's hilliest regions. The trip will culminate in summiting Innerdalstårnet (1500m), one of the most iconic mountains in the country. We will be staying in mountain huts and hotels and spending our last night in the beautifully situated Radisson Blu Hotel in Trondheim.

Itinerary
-
Flight from LGW, leaving at 1030 and arriving in Trondheim at 1400 local time. Then a drive in a private minibus to Oppdal in the Dovre region of Norway, a journey of just over 2 hours. We should be checking into the Oppdal Gjestetun Hotel around 1800 where we will have dinner and spend the night.
-
After breakfast we drive for 45 mins to Storlidalen and park at the the Bortistu Gjestegard Mountain Farm - in the heart of Trollheimen. The walking begins, initially along a gravel track to Lake Tovatna - a quiet, crystal clear lake with a stony bottom and a backdrop of rolling mountain peaks. From here we follow a marked trail to Kårvatn, enjoying our packed lunch on the way, where we stay in grass-roofed wooden cabins by the river near a waterfall. The hut is self catering although we will not have to carry our own food as it is provided, along with cooking facilities. Walking time: 6 - 7 hours.
-
In the morning after breakfast we start our second hiking day on a gravel road before climbing into the mountains to meet the trail from Todalen. Eventually, the easy, meandering trail will give way to a steepish climb, all the way up Bjøråskaret with impressive views of the Innerdalen Valley (known as the most beautiful valley in the country). After lunch we descend to the Innerdal Mountain Lodge, our accommodation for the night. Again this is also a self catering hut, but with everything provided. Walking time: 6 hours
-
The third full day of hiking is perhaps the most beautiful of the trip. We make our way initially through marshy valley terrain and then start to climb toward the "Gate of Innerdalen", where the summits of Kringlehøa and Storsalen rise up on either side. We keep going to the highest point of the trail, a place called Meskaret, with sweeping views of the 12.5-mile (20-km) valley of Storlidalen. Then we descend to Lake Tovatna and, if the weather is good, have a swim before hiking the last couple miles down to Storlidalen and the minibus. We return to Oppdap for the night in the Gjestetun Hotel. Walking time: 7 hours
-
Today we will start early and drive to Eiriksvollen where we park up the minibus. Then we walk north up a valley before turning east as we approach the mountain. The summit of Innerdalstårnet (1,452 meters) is a little exposed, but we don't need any climbing experience to tackle the peak. A bit of scrambling is required near the top as the route zig zags to the summit. We will return by the minibus at around 4 pm for the drive back to Trondheim and the Radisson Blu hotel. Walking time: 6 hours
-
After breakfast we will leave the hotel at around 0830 for our return flight to London Gatwick which departs at 11.55. It arrives in Gatwick at 1335 London time.
