Ferrata Strobel, Punta Fiames

Ferrata Strobel, Punta Fiames

Duration - 5 hours

DIFFICULT

.Take the car and park outside the Olympia campsite which is just off the main road on the right heading north out of Cortina, about 5 km from the town. Now on foot, cross over the main road, and take path 211 to the old railway track. Turn left and then walk north along the track for about 1 km until you reach a route crossing the path. Turn right on this path, which is marked Strobel Via Ferrata, and follow it as it rises steeply through pine scrub and scree until you reach the start of the Ferrata at the foot of the Pomagagnon massive. Initially, this route is unprotected and follows a ledge with a lot of scrub. Look out for the start of the protection Via Ferrata which rises steeply from a chimney on the left as it is easy to overshoot and continue on the ledge for another 200 meters or so before it becomes obvious that you have gone too far.

The Ferrata starts steeply and is very enjoyable as it zigzags up the side of the mountain. It finishes at a spot height of 2,178 meters at the top of Punta Fiames at which there is a flat summit, ideal for a break. The descent route then follows a similar direction to the ascent along route 202 between the cleft in the mountain (between Punta Fiames and Croda del Pomagagnon). The route then turns to the south as you descend over uncomfortable and very broken scree until it reaches the wood. Continue the path until you reach route 211 on which you turn right and then retrace your steps back to the campsite car park.
