Ferrata Ski Club 19, Mount Faloria
Ferrata Ski Club 19, Mount Faloria
Duration - 5 hours
VERY CHALLENGING
Park on the verge at the end of the road, leading east out of the southern side of Cortina, just past the Cristallo Spa and Hotel, at the start of Route 210. A pretty gradual ascent on Route 210 takes you through the pine trees and bushes for about 2,000 meters before transferring to Route 206 for about 700 meters. At a sign-posted junction, the path to the Ski Club 19 Ferrata is clearly marked, leading off on the right. The path winds steadily and then steeply for about 500 meters until you reach the start of the Ferrata (which has a metal plate/sign screwed to the rock). This is about 1.30 hours from the car. The ferrata begins with a vertical ascent and although combining a number of ledges and traverses on the way it is 75% vertical all the way and very exposed. The equipment is very modern, placed in 2009, and consists of rubber conical caps on the staples, rungs, and one ladder. Upper body strength is important as the route takes about 2 hours and your arms are feeling pretty tired at the end.
After a number of false summits and traverses through 2 wide gullies near the top the route brings you out just under the Faloria cable car station. 100 meters to the east and just above the station the clearly marked route 212 begins, enabling you to descend steeply to the west and back to the car. Take 212 for about 2,000 meters before turning left and back on to route 210, leading to the car after a further 1,750 meters.
Although the descent is particularly steep it is not unpleasant as there is little scree to contend with, dropping down through pine brush before reaching the forest. The descent takes just over an hour.
This Ferrata is reputed to be the most technically difficult in the Cortina area – nonetheless, despite the anxiety felt during the climb the attractiveness and ease of route in and out make it a wonderful and memorable experience.
