Ferrata Barbara & Dalaiti, Val di Fanes
Ferrata Barbara & Dalaiti, Val di Fanes
Duration - 3 hours
EASY
Take the main road north out of Cortina. As the road starts to change direction to the East (about 5 km from Cortina) through a series of hairpin bends park in a small parking area at the end of the first hairpin at a height of 1449 (marked as S. Uberto on the map).
Then, on foot, descend west through the wood for 400 meters until you reach route 10 which initially follows a river, crossing a bridge and then climbing for a further 1.5 km. Just as you reach the clearing, with wooden rails surrounding a viewing area, with terrific views to the west, the start of Ferrata is signposted on the right.
The Ferrata initially leads down a ledge to a stream bottom which is greeted by a large waterfall cascading from the rocks above. Once across the stream the protection stops for a bit as you head west into a prominent gully and find the start of the return Ferrata. This follows a higher ledge to the descent and actually takes you behind the falling water of the waterfall. The Ferrata ends about 100 meters further up on the path from where the descent route began. Take the same route back to the carpark.
This is a great route for Via Ferrata beginners. It encounters a number of sheer sections coupled with a bit of climbing so beginners can get used to using the equipment whilst testing their tolerance to vertigo and ability to climb. The gorge is also stunning and very atmospheric.
