Ferrata Zumeles, Punta Erbing

Ferrata Zumeles, Punta Erbing

Duration - 5 hours

MODERATE

Take the car and park outside the Olympia Camp Site which is just off the main road heading north out of Cortina, about 5 km from the town. Now on foot, cross over the main road, and take path 211, up to the old railway line. Now follow the line south for about 500 meters until you pick up route 211 again.

Take this route for a further 600 meters until you reach the junction with Route 202. Turn left onto 202 and follow this for about 1,750 meters, climbing from pine forest and then very steeply through scrub bushes and scree until you reach the base of the Pomagagnon massive. Here the Zumeles ferrata begins, unprotected to begin with, which follows a large ledge, often with pine shrubs, as it climbs to the right across the face of the massive. Taking care during the traverse and, in particular, one prominent unprotected gully you reach the top of the ledge on a saddle just under Punta Erbing (2,301 m). The climb to the top takes no more than 15 minutes but is well worth it to see the views of Monte Cristallo, to the east and the Tofanas to the West.

The descent takes a charming track through the woods, following the ridge east, until you reach a well-signed gully and route 204 which begins the descent. The steep descent reaches scrub and the wood line quite quickly, linking up with route 211 onto which you turn right, which winds and descends slowly back to the car park by the camp site.
