Ferrata dell’Averau, Averau

Ferrata dell’Averau, Averau

Duration - 4 hours

MODERATE

Drive west from Cortina on the Falzarego Pass. 10 minutes after Pocol, at a spot height of 1732 meters take the narrow metalled road on the left south for 2,500 meters to the Refuge

Cinque Torri. The car park is very limited, as this is a popular area for climbers and tourists who wish to view the outside Great War Museum of Cinque Torri (well worth a visit), so find a spot on the grass verge on either side of the road. From here take route 439 and climb steadily for the next 90 minutes, passing the Refuge Scoliattoli on your right and its lift system to the Refuge Averau at 2,413m.

From the refuge head due north, on a path marked clearly Via Ferrata Averau for about 10 minutes until the path turns abruptly left and climbs for about 75 meters to the start of the wire. The Via Ferrata is quite short, about 30 minutes, and starts quite steeply giving an option of going left up a chimney or right on an open face. Given that the descent follows the same route select one of the options and take the other one on the way down for a bit of variety. Once you have reached the top of the Ferrata take a meandering path, initially on the left to reach the top of Averau in about 30 minutes.

The descent takes the same route as the ascent and you can be back where you parked the car within 90 minutes.

This is not favoured via Ferrata of mine. The hour-long approach walk, mainly over a desolate ski slope, doesn't justify the short Via Ferrata. I'm sure the views from the top would be great though (it was cloudy when I did it)
